For the last 3 years since I've had my ATOS, I've been motivated to beat the Laragne site record set by Gil Souviron of 275 km FAI in 2007. I've got as near as 266 km and Gil told me : "Just fly a little further north and a little further south and you'll get it !" (but some days it's just not that easy !)
Depuis les 3 dernières années,
depuis que je vole en ATOS, mon objectif a été de battre le record du
site de Laragne détenu par Gil Souviron de 275 km en triangle FAI en 2007. Je
l'avais approché à 266 km et Gil m'avait dit : "Vole juste un peu plus
au nord et un peu plus au sud et tu l'auras !". Pas si simple ...
Cette semaine, je suis en
vacances et les prévisions sont bonnes. Mardi 15, je fais un vol de
226 km en 8h05 dans des conditions assez difficiles et un plafond bas au
sud de mon circuit. Le jour suivant, je me repose pour être prêt le
jeudi 17 juillet. Les prévisions sont très prometteuses avec des
cumulus, un vent léger à 3000 m et un haut plafond.
I take off at 12.20, as the first pilot off, a swiss ATOS pilot, shows us it's not very good yet. My first turnpoint is to the west, but it's not working so well this early so I only go 23 km instead of 30 km as I had hoped, before heading NNE. I soon get under the nearest clouds and make good progress. West of the Pic de Bure I meet up with Mart, we climb in strong lift to 3400m.
Je décolle à 12h20 alors que
le premier à partir, un pilote suisse en ATOS, nous montre que c'est un
peu tôt. Je fais mon premier turnpoint à l'ouest à seulement 23km
(j'avais espéré 30 km) mais ce n'est pas encore vraiment bon car c'est un peu
tôt. Je mets le cap NNE et j'atteins rapidement les premiers nuages en
progressant rapidement. A l'ouest du Pic de Bure, je rencontre Mart et
nous prenons ensemble une pompe jusqu'à 3400m.

I continue NE into the Ecrins for turnpoint 2 at 88 km from the TP 1. Spectacular views of the highest summits, cloud base for me is 3700m but over 4300m for Phil and Jacques who go much deeper into the mountains on their Swifts.

jusqu'à 4300m avec leur Swift car ils entrent plus profondément dans les montagnes.

The conditions are now fantastic and I go from cloud to cloud. On arriving at the Morgon south of Serre-Ponçon Lake, I meet up again with Mart ! He finds the good thermal a bit out in front, and at 2900m we head direct to the Dormillouse where I recognise the Swift of Phil T. climbing with another hangglider and then head to the west.
Les conditions sont maintenant
fantastiques et je vais de nuage en nuage jusqu'au Morgon au sud du
lac de Serre-Ponçon et là je rencontre Mart à nouveau ! Il trouve le bon
thermique et à 2900 m nous allons vers Dormillouse où je reconnais le
Swift de Phil T. montant avec un autre delta et filant à l'ouest.

Flying fast south down the Blanche onto the Tête de l'Estrop doesn't work very well for me and I end up at 2450m in ridge lift in one of the huge west facing bowls before the next thermal comes up and takes me to cloud base at 3000m. The crossing of the "No man's land" south of l'Estrop towards the valley of Thorame Haute (and it's big landing fields !) is done without any stress as I'm at cloudbase.

la Blanche vers la Tête de l'Estrop ne marche pas très bien et je
finis à 2450m sur les falaises de son imposante face ouest avant que le
prochain thermique m'emmène au plafond à 3000m. La traversée du "No man's
land" du sud de l'Estrop vers la vallée de Thorame Haute (et ses grands
champs !) se fait sans stress et je recolle au plafond.
I know that if I make TP 3 near Saint-André and get back to Laragne I'll have the record. On the Pic de Chamatte I turn and head north. I'm 111km from TP2 and 73km from the Chabre, it's 18h20 and a dying small CB has cast shadow over the whole area. I can't get above 2000m. The situation looks hopeless ! After crossing onto the TO of Saint André on the Chalvet, I meet up with plenty of PGs and hanggliders who are ridge soaring in the pleasant evening breeze. As usual here the breeze is at least 15-20 km/h west, and I'm now at 1600m. I figure I'll fly a little bit up the ridge to add a few more km's to my flight before returning to land at La Mure where I've seen some hanggliders (and event a sailplane !) landed.
Je sais maintenant que si je
fais le 3ème turnpoint à Saint-André et que je rentre à Laragne, j'aurai
le record. Sur le Pic de Chamatte, je tourne et pointe au nord. Je suis
à 111 km du turnpoint 2 et à 73 km de Laragne, il est 18h20 et de
petits cumulo-nimbus mourants font de l'ombre sur toute la zone et je
n'arrive pas à remonter au dessus de 2000m. La situation semble
désespérée. Après avoir traversé le décollage du Chalvet, je vois plein
de parapentes et de delta qui planent tranquillement dans la douce brise
du soir. C'est assez courant ici que la brise soit de 15 ou 20 km/h
ouest, et je suis maintenant à 1600m. Je prévois de voler encore un peu
pour ajouter encore quelques km à mon vol avant d'aller me poser à la
Mure où je vois quelques delta au sol, et même un planeur !
Out of nowhere I fly into a thermal that slowly takes me to 3000m, I'm so surprised as there 's no sunshine. With this height and even a headwind I know I can now "escape" the mountains and get at least to the SW face of the Cousson. I arrive at 1700m but get nothing, here the wind is SW which is normal in the evening and I can see PGs flying the site of Digne-Courbons and get a really good glide onto this mountains with its SW bowls. I keep heading north in the smooth evening lift and gain 100m. At the end of this valley is the village of Thoard and there are landing fields (last year Christian V. landed here after an attempt at a 300 km triangle, he had flown 289 km).
Venu de nulle part, je trouve
un thermique qui me remonte à 3000 m, je suis très surpris car il n'y a
pas de soleil. Avec cette altitude, même avec un vent de face je sais
que je peux maintenant m'échapper des montagnes et aller au moins
jusqu'à la face SW du Cousson. Je l'atteins à 1700 m mais je ne trouve
rien. Ici le vent est SW ce qui normal en soirée et j'observe les
parapentes sur le site de Digne-Courbons qui planent sur la face SW de
cette montagne. Je continue au nord dans un vent dynamique qui me
redonne 100m. Au bout de cette vallée, il y a le village de Thoard et
ses grands champs où Christian V. a atterrit l'an dernier après une
tentative de triangle de plus de 300km, il avait fait 289 km!

With the SSW tailwind I was able to glide on to the Montagne de Melan arriving at 1450m and soar up in gentle ridge lift. It was now after 20h00 I couldn't get more than 1900m but that's enough to get me at least to the gliding field of Vaumeilh where I know with the 5% rule my flight will be valid. The evening "glass off" gives me an incredible glide and I'm hardly sinking, but the Brauniger is still pessimistic about my chances of making Laragne !

j'atteins la montagne de Melan à 1450m où je reprends lentement en dynamique. Il est
maintenant 20h00 et je ne peux monter plus haut que 1900m mais c'est
assez pour me permettre d'atteindre les champs de Vaumeilh où je sais
qu'avec la règle des 5% mon vol sera validé. La restitution de la vallée me donne un glide très porteur, mais mon Brauniger
est toujours pessimiste sur mes chances d'atteindre Laragne !
Suddenly the air's lifting enough to circle in, and gaining 250m, my instrument tells me I'll make the camping of Laragne. In fact, the whole valley is "lifting" and I continue to loose hardly anything and (while watching the sun set behind Beaumont) on to the NW face of the Chabre, I continue, then turn back to land at the camping in nil wind and a perfect landing. It's 21h05 and I've flown 291 km FAI triangle in 8h40mn : this is also the biggest FAI triangle flown by a hangglider in France beating also Gil's record of 286 km.
Subitement,
un petit thermique me permet de gagner 250m et le Brauniger me donne le feu vert pour le camping de Laragne ! En effet, tout l'air de la vallée monte doucement avec la restitution du soir et je plane sans rien perdre, tout en regardant le coucher de
soleil derrière Beaumont. Je pointe vers la face NW du Chabre, puis fais
demi-tour vers le camping où je fais un atterrissage parfait avec un
vent nul. Il est 21h05 et j'ai volé 291 km en triangle FAI en 8h40mn :
c'est non seulement le record du site de Laragne, mais aussi le record
de France pour un triangle FAI en deltaplane détenu aussi par Gil à 286km !
I'm soaked in sweat from the last few hours spent low in still very warm conditions, and am very happy to receive the big glass of beer handed to me by Mehrdad !
The moral of this flight is "never give up" !
Je suis complètement trempé
de transpiration car j'ai passé les dernières heures très bas dans des
températures élevées et j'apprécie particulièrement la grande bière que
m'apporte Merdad !
Morale de ce vol : never give up !
