Coup double !

Je monte mon aile très tôt sur le décollage nord bas au Chabre mais à midi le vent faiblit (comme annoncé) et les autres pilotes s'installent au sommet du Chabre pour avoir l'option de décollage sud. A 12h30, un pilote décolle en parapente et nous montre que ça ne tient pas et qu'il n'y a pas encore de thermiques côté nord. Je décide d'attendre alors que le ciel était plein de cumulus sur les sommets.

I got set up early on the lower north TO but by 12 the wind had got very light (as predicted) and other pilots went up to the top of the Chabre to have the option to TO south. At 12h30 a pilot took off on a paraglider and proved that it wasn't soarable and that there were no thermals yet on the north side. I decided to wait, the sky was looking great with cumulus over all the summits.

A 13h10, trop impatient et ne voulant pas être coincé là quand ça virera au sud car on ne peut pas décoller sud où j'étais, je décolle nord avec un vent nul. Je pars en descente vers l'ouest et longe les falaises côté nord jusqu'à me trouver sous le décollage sud où je tombe sur le thermique qui me sauve. Je trace lentement ma voie pour remonter et à chaque 360° je vois les visages des nombreux pilotes qui me regardent d'en haut !

At 13h10 I got too impatient and took off north in nearly nil wind (I didn't want to be stuck here when it went south, you can't take off south here). I flew west along the north side cliffs getting lower until I was directly under the top south TO where I caught my "saving" thermal. I slowly worked my way up the north face of the Chabre and with each 360° I could see the many faces of the pilots on top looking down at me !

Une fois au dessus de la crête, les thermiques se renforcent et je peux enfin avancer. Les nuages vers l'ouest sont super et je fais mon premier turnpoint juste au nord du Ventoux à 32 km. Ensuite, je prends la crête de la montagne de Lure qui est surmontée d'une rue de nuages et plusieurs planeurs me montrent la route. R Salon n'est pas actif et je n'ai pas besoin de rester sous FL075 (2270 m) et je prends des thermiques jusqu'au plafond à 2600 m. 

Once above the ridge the thermal improved and I was on my way. The clouds to the west looked great and I made the 1st turnpoint just north of the Ventoux at 32 km. I then followed the crete of the Montagne de Lure which was lined with clouds and several gliders to mark the way. R Salon wasn't active so I didnt't have to stay below FL075 (2270 m) and happily took the thermals to 2600 cloud base.

Je décide de faire mon 2ème turnpoint a l'entrée des Gorges du Verdon à l'est du site de Moustiers où je vois plusieurs parapentes. Il y a beaucoup de planeurs aussi. Le ciel est maintenant couvert aux 6/8 de cumulus et pour le turnpoint 3 je mets cap au nord. Le vent est légèrement sud-ouest en altitude. Au dessus du site de Courbons Digne, j'enroule bord à bord avec un parapente  : un grand moment ! (Je regarde plus tard sur la CFD et je vois qu'il s'agit de Laurent G qui a décollé de la Sainte-Victoire sur un Mantra II !).

I decided on a 2nd turnpoint at the entrance to the Verdon Gorge east of the site at Moustiers, where I saw several paragliders. There were lots of gliders. There was now 6/8 covered in cumulus and for turnpoint 3 I headed north, the wind was light southwest at altitude. Over the site of Courbons Digne, I climbed wingtip to wingtip with a paraglider, a great moment ! (I later saw on the CFD that it was Laurent G who had taken off from the Sainte Victoire on a  Mantra II! ).

Une autoroute de nuages me conduit NNE vers Dormillouse que je survole et je continue encore 8 km jusqu'au bout de Morgon. Il est maintenant 18h40 et j'ai 50 km à faire pour rentrer à Laragne. 

Je reprends la même rue de nuages qui dévie aussi vers le sud-ouest ce qui est super puisque c'est la direction que j'ai besoin de prendre ! Même si tard, 19h30 les nuages sont encore actifs et je fais une transition jusqu'à Maloup jusqu'au dessus du sommet où j'attrape le "thermique maison" qui me remonte à 2300 m, assez haut pour rentrer à Laragne dans l'air porteur du soir.

A cloud street "motorway" was heading NNE to words the Dormillouse which I took and then added anorther 8 km on to the end of the Morgon. It was now 18h40 and I had 50km back to Laragne. 

I got back under the same cloud street then which diverged to the SW too, which was great as that was the direction I needed to go ! Even this late, 19h30 the clouds where active and I was able to glide onto Maloup just above the top, where I found the "house thermal" which I took to 2300 m which was enough to glide back to Laragne in the buoyant evening air.

Je dois enlever mes verres teintés alors que le soleil est presque couché. Je me pose à 20h17 au camping de Laragne ce qui surprend certains pilotes qui reviennent juste du restaurant et me voient tout à coup survoler le terrain!. Si je devais évaluer la journée, je mettrais 8/10 : journée pas assez longue (en juin c'est mieux) et le plafond était moyen. C'est mon meilleur vol jamais effectué si tôt dans l'année.

I had to take off my sunglasses as the sun was nearly setting. I touched down at the campsite at 20h17!  (which amazed some pilots who had just come out of  a restaurant and looking up saw me flying over).

I rate the day 8/10 : the day not long enough (June's better) and cloudbase just average. It's my best flight so early in the year.

Lundi 7 avril / Monday

On se retrouve à environ 12 pilotes de delta sur le décollage bas sud des fainéants au Chabre en ce lundi matin. La journée était estimée comme celle d'hier mais avec moins de nuages et un vent de sud, prévisions qui s'avèrent correctes. Je décolle en premier à 12h30 et je pars à l'ouest le long du Chabre juste en dessous de la crête pendant 3 km avant de rencontrer mon premier vrai thermique ! Les choses s'améliorent ensuite et je n'insiste pas vers l'ouest et fais mon premier turnpoint après la crête de Chamousse.

We were at leat 12 hanggliding pilots to set up on the fainéants lower south TO this monday morning. The day was forecast to be similar to yesterday, but with less cloud and a south wind, both proved to be correct. I got off first at 12h30 and flew west along the Chabre at just below ridge height for about 3 km before hitting my frist real thermal ! Things then improved. I didn't insist to the west and made my first turnpoint just after the crete of Chamousse.

En revenant vers le Chabre à l'est du Col Saint Jean, je rencontre Alain Chauvet et nous montons ensemble à 2400 m, puis il bifurque vers l'ouest et moi vers le nord vers Beaumont et les nuages les plus proches (c'est que je prends cette photo du halo : depuis des années je voulais capturer cette image rare et étonnante !).  Quelques nuages plus loin et je pars en transition vers la face sud du Pic de Bure où j'arrive à 2000 m et je prends un thermique énorme et très fort qui me propulse en haut de cette montagne (si on avait une route et un décollage au sommet, ce serait le meilleur site du monde !).

Back onto the Chabre east of the Col Saint Jean, I met up with Alain Chauvet and climbed together to 2400 m, he then headed west and I north towards Beaumont and the nearest clouds (which is where I took the halo photo : for years I've wanted to capture this amazing and rare image in a photo !). A couple more clouds and I was on glide to the south face of the Pic de Bure where I arrived at 2000m, and hit the huge strong thermal that race up this mountain (if we had a road to the top and a take off, it would be the best site in the world !).

J'ai ensuite suivi la face sud vers Charance puis au nord au dessus du Champsaur jusqu'au Chaillol, face sud ouest des Ecrins. Je n'ai pas trouvé là le bon thermique, juste des bulles d'air très puissantes qui me bousculent dans tous les sens ! Je quitte le coin sans avoir jamais atteint le plafond et je pars  au sud est vers Ancelle et le Piolit où je rencontre d'excellentes conditions et un plafond à 3100 m.

I then follow the south faces towards Charance then went north over the Champsaur onto the Chaillol  the south west face of the Ecrins. I couldn't find a solid thermal just bits of thermal screaming up the mountain, all rather scary ! I left having never got to cloud base and went to the south east the direction of Ancelle and the Piolit great condition and solid thermals at 3100 m cloudbase.

Après une transition sur le Serre-Ponçon,  je me trouve sur le Morgon à 2000 m où je  rencontre le thermique le plus puissant de la journée 5 à 7 m/s, puis j'ai pris au sud sur Dormillouse puis sur l'autoroute pavée de nuages et empruntée par de nombreux planeurs. Sur la Côte Longue, j'ai atteint 2600 m et changé de cap pour le retour vers Laragne via le Cheval Blanc et sa face sud ouest avec du vent et de bons nuages.

The glide over the Serre-Ponçon was buoyant and once on the Morgon I hit the most powerful thermal of the day 5 to 7 ms, and then south  onto the Dormillouse and down the "motorway" paved with clouds and marked by loads of gliders. On the Cote Longue, I got to 2600m and then changed cap for the journey back to Laragne, onto the Cheval and its south west face into  wind and good clouds.

J'ai réussi à voler en transition jusqu'au site de Courbons au nord de Digne où plusieurs parapentes étaient toujours en l'air : c'est bon signe ! Sans monter très haut, j'ai atteint la vallée de Thoard jusqu'à la Montagne de Melan qui retient le flux de sud ouest et qui marche en dynamique (j'ai déjà testé ce site 5 fois, et 5 fois il a marché). Il est presque 19h et le ciel est maintenant recouvert de nuages d'altitude. Au nord ouest du  Melan, j'ai trouvé un bon 3+ qui m'a ramené à 2700 m d'où je n'avais plus qu'à me laisser glisser pendant  23 km avant d'atteindre Laragne où j'ai atterri à 19h30.
Je suis crevé après avoir passé exactement 14 heures en vol en 2 jours et maintenant j'ai vraiment besoin d'un break !

I was able to glide onto the Courbons north of Digne where several paraglidings were flying always a good sign ! Not getting high  I flew north up the Thoard valley and onto the Montagne de Melan which blocks the south west flow and is ridge soarable (I've tried it 5 times and it's worked 5 times). It was now 7 pm and the sky was covered with a thickning of high cloud. On the Nw end of the Melan I hit a solid 3+ which took me to 2700m from which I had enough height to glide the 23 km back to Laragne to land at 19h30
I was exhausted after 14 hours airtime in 2 days . I really needed a rest !!
